No two teams have changed more since they last met each other than the Comox Valley Glacier Kings and the Peninsula Panthers. The Panthers have only 11 players that played all 4 games against Comox and the Glacier Kings have only 9 players that played all 4 against Peninsula. The Panthers have 4 players who never played against Comox as a member of the Panthers and the Glacier Kings have 6 players that never played a game against Peninsula as a member of the Glacier Kings, still following me? Excellent.
With all the new acquisitions since these two clubs last met, it’s hard to look into the head-to-head match up stats, but with the similar core groups of players, these numbers could have some merit on the series. Comox outshot Peninsula 112-104 in the 4 game series in the regular series but they really struggled on the powerplay. The Panthers’ powerplay was fantastic against Comox in the regular season going 4/16 (25%) whereas on the other hand Comox's powerplay went 3/29 (10.34%) - a part of their game they truly need to improve on to win this series.
Both teams had some top-end defensive talent during the regular season. Duncan Pernal was 3rd in North Division scoring and 6th overall in the league with 29 goals and 31 assists for 60 points in 48 games. Comox also had the North Division’s highest scoring defenseman with Derian Hamilton who had 10 goals and 38 assists in 46 games.
Peninsula's offense was powered by Connor Logan, who is second in league scoring in the regular season with 28 goals and 47 assists for 75 points - the most in the South Division. Right behind him is the trade deadline acquisition Alex Milligan who is lighting it up as a Panther. Since joining the team, Alex has 17 goals and 9 assists for 26 points in 13 games in the regular season. He led the league in goals with 46 and added 27 assists to give him 73 points. The Panthers also had Tate Coughlin, Jackson Skerratt and Cole Glover who all found themselves in top 20 in league scoring. Peninsula's scoring defense was led by Cody Breitenstein, who is the leagues 4th highest scoring defenseman with 34 points in the regular season.
The matchup between the pipes is definitely going to be one of the biggest storylines of this series. Michael Hails was lights-out all season long for Comox, yet he never played a game against Peninsula. He only started one game in the series against Saanich but look for him to be between the pipes in every game in this series against Peninsula. He had the 3rd lowest GAA in the regular season (2.28) and the highest Save Percentage (.931). The man he'll be facing at the other end of the ice is Stephen Heslop. The playoff machine ended the regular season with a 3.07 GAA (10th) and a .906 SV% (7th), in the 5 game series against Westshore, Heslop had a .870 SV% and 3.21 GAA and has won 4 in a row after dropping the first game.
This Glacier Kings team was banged up at the end of their Round 1 series, they're hoping they get some players back in the break between series and Danish star Dallas Maxwell might play a part in the Nanaimo Clippers BCHL playoff run. Two games in the series come on back-to back occasions. The Panthers are 8-3-0-0 in the 2nd game of back-to-backs and the Glacier Kings are 7-5-1-0. Comox is also 2-1-0-0 when playing the third game in three nights. Both of these teams went on remarkable winning streaks this season. Comox won 10 straight from October 18th to November 14th and Peninsula won 10 straight from December 20th to January 25th. Now I'll present the 1st round playoff stats of these two teams and then my "Keys to the Series" for each team.

In Peninsula's 1st round series they outscored their opponent 26-17 (average 5.2 goals per game). They outshot them 217-123 (Average 43.4 shots per game). The powerplay went 4/35 (11.43%) and the penalty kill was successful on 32/39 attempts (82.05%). In Comox's 1st round series against Saanich they outscored the Braves 19-6 (Average 4.75 goals per game). They outshot the Braves 131-96 (Average 32.75 shots per game). The Glacier Kings’ Powerplay went 4/20 (20 %) and they killed 20/21 Saanich PP opportunities (95.24%). Both teams statistically dominated their first round playoff opponents, but expect this series to be a close hard-fought one. Now, my keys to the series:
Keys to the Series for Comox:
1)
Health. The Glacier Kings were really banged up after their series against Saanich with 11 of their regular starting lineup out at the end of game 4. With a week to recover hopefully they get some players back in the lineup for game 1.
2)
Use Home Ice. The Glacier Kings are 18-6-1-1 on home ice this year, with a team like Peninsula that is so strong at home, all you have to do is win your home games and the series is yours. The Panthers will look to steal one early which is the last thing Comox wants.
3)
All Hail Hails. This man is an absolute machine in net for Comox, he's going to see a lot of rubber like Matt Chester did in Round 1 and Comox is going to need him at 100% in order to stop Peninsula dynamic offense.
Keys to the Series for Peninsula:
1)
Powerplay. The Panthers powerplay is built with some of the best scorers in the league, with Rylan Ball heating up in Round 1, the Panthers will look for him and the rest of the powerful offense to get the powerplay clicking – it’s crucial for a series win.
2)
Offense from the Defense. The Panthers got 10 goals and 18 assists from their defenseman in their first round series against Westshore. That’s right, the defense scored 38.46% of their goals. That's huge. If they can keep it up with point shots and traffic, they might have a shot at getting a few by Hails.
3)
Composure. The Panthers stole a game in Westshore by getting under their skin and forcing Westshore to take penalties. This Comox team only has three 20-year-olds (Tupper, Kamprath, Govig). They have to play smart and once they shake the Glacier Kings a little bit, they have to keep at it, playing fast, physical and aggressive.
