Panthers set to open Main Camp

2013-08-25

#11 Reece Costain and #19 Nathan Looysen are seen here in action against the Oceanside Generals last season. The two returning veterans will be counted on heavily in this 2013/14 season as the Panthers look to take a bite out of the VIJHL's best Clubs.

The long summer days are coming to an end as the Peninsula Panthers ready for the 2013/14 season.

Head Coach Brian Passmore and his staff have worked the phone lines for the past several months and now it is time to see if their work will pay dividends as the Peninsula Panthers are set to open Main Camp this Friday evening.  The Club will send a group of players comprised mostly of rookies to Pearkes Arena on Friday to face the Saanich Braves in an exhibition game with the puck set to drop at 6:30 pm.  Most of the returning veterans will be put through their paces at the Panorama Recreation Centre.  And then on Saturday, the Vets will hit the ice once again at the Panorama followed by an exhibition game at 7:15 pm with the same Saanich Braves Hockey Club.  On Sunday all players will practice and then on Monday at 10:00 am an intersquad game will take place followed by the final cuts.  On Monday evening the team will hold it's first practice together with further practices slated for Tuesday and Wednesday before the Panthers Home Opener on September 6th at 7:30 pm at the Panorama Recreation Centre.

"I think we will have a pretty solid group this time around," explained Passmore.  "Last year we had 19 rookies that made the team in early September and we all went through a learning curve together.   We really did not set out any goals other than to develop as individuals and as a team.  This time around we want to continue to develop and move individuals to the next level but as important is to create a culture of winning.  I expect that our players will expect to win.  I expect that our players will play the price.  We should have a lot of fun this season."

And with that statement from Passmore, the tone has been set for the Main Camp and the Regular Season and Playoffs.  Admission is free on Saturday evening for the game against the Braves.
