PENINSULA PANTHERS of the VIJHL ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP with VICTORIA HOSPICE

2012-10-05

Peninsula Panthers help out the Victoria Hospice on Sunday, October 7th, 11:30 am - 3:00 pm at Charity Car Wash.

Peninsula Panthers and Victoria Hospice announce a community partnership to benefit end-of-life care in Victoria. The partnership will be launched officially on Friday, October 5th at the Panthers game against the Victoria Cougars.

Victoria, BC — As part of the launch, the Peninsula Panthers are holding a charity Car Wash on Sunday, October 7th at Industrial Plastic and Paints; 776 Cloverdale from 11:30am-3:00pm.  All proceeds from the car wash will go directly to Hospice’s end-of-life care programs.

The Peninsula Panthers are known for power plays both on and off the ice.  Helping out in the community coupled with assisting on ice with their Peninsula Eagles minor hockey teams, is all part of their program of building community in Victoria.  “In working with Victoria Hospice to form this partnership, we are making a strong statement that anyone or any one family dealing with death is not alone,” says Peninsula Panthers Governor, Pete Zubersky.  “Our players, coaches, staff, and executives are committed to supporting Hospice in any way possible.  A further example of our commitment is announcing at each game that Hospice’s Director of Development, Kathleen Burton is our anthem singer for all home games.”

”In some cultures, the panther is a symbol of power, courage and valor and if you have it as your totem you are blessed with its protective and powerful presence.. Individuals with panther totems are thought to be people who come into this world with a spiritual knowing - a deeper understanding of spiritual things. Victoria Hospice is very fortunate to have the Peninsula Panthers care and demonstrate a deeper understanding of what Hospice does in the community and for the support we need in order to ensure we are able to continue to do so in the future.”

Although the Panther is not a symbol known to the hospice movement it is certainly becoming familiar to Victoria Hospice.  The Panther (also commonly known as the Black Panther represents the Peninsula Panthers on their team jerseys and is their team brand) is a large member of the Big Cat family, native to the Americans, Africa and Asia.  It is not an individual species but rather the common name used to refer to any black coloured feline of the Big Cat family, most especially Leopards and Jaguars.

“Victoria Hospice continues to build community through unique partnerships like that of the Panthers and with another of the “big cats”, the Jaguar Club of Vancouver Island, that was formed in July 2012” explains Burton.

“The Panthers are a young and talented team who want to give back to the community,” says Zubersky.  “They are skilled and passionate young players and they translate that same skill and passion into their community spirit and Panthers pride.  We look forward to doing all that we can do to ensuring care remains for all those who need it.”

Victoria Hospice is a registered charity that has, since 1980, provided end-of-life care focused on palliative treatment.  Nurses, counsellors, spiritual caregivers, physicians and trained volunteers provide comfort for the patient and support for the family, rather than a cure for progressive and life-limiting illness. Care is offered in patients’ homes, within our 17-bed in-patient unit, and as specific medical consultation to patients in other health care facilities.  Over 400 trained volunteers provide companionship and support. Victoria Hospice offers bereavement support to families for up to one year following at death.

Roughly 50% of Victoria Hospice's annual operating costs are not covered by our health care system, and must be funded through community partnerships and donations to our Victoria Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation.

The Peninsula Panthers are a Junior B Hockey Club playing in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League.  Their goal is simple; move players to the next level. Panthers helping out in the community and schools, plus assisting on ice with our Peninsula Eagles minor hockey teams, is all part of our program of building character for your future.
