Robson is not 'Scotties Little Softie'

2021-08-24

Robson Scott played his Minor Hockey on the Peninsula and will not wander far from home joining the Peninsula Panthers

One thing Coach Tippett is not able to teach is Big. And Robson Scott arrives to the Organization with that trait in spades.

It was a sunny Thursday afternoon in late March of 2021 on the Peninsula and for all intents and purposes, the season had been long over and put into mothballs months earlier.  The Panthers had chosen to continue to run ice and on this particular afternoon there were only seven Panthers players taking turns sitting out as the others played 3-on-3.  GM Peter Zubersky was watching defenceman Robson Scott closely.  He would often forget if it was Robson Scott or Scott Robson but that being what it was, he was keeping a close eye on the rearguard.  Perhaps age was having something to do with getting the name right or maybe it was that Zubersky has seen a lot of Robson's and a lot of Scott's in his 20-plus years in Junior Hockey.  After a protracted period of time, the General Manager ambled around to the players bench from the stands and spent a couple of minutes talking to each player individually while the other six went through the paces.  He paid special attention to Scott as the 18-year-old had just finished a season with the Peninsula Midget AA team and was obviously hoping to catch on with the Panthers for the upcoming season.

"I asked him point blank if he wanted to play for the Panthers and he answered in a way that left no doubt in my mind that he did," said Zubersky.  "What most impressed me was that we locked eye contact and he kept it throughout our chat.  That told me everything I needed to know.  It told me that he was confident and honest and we care about that as an Organization.  Those character traits are small things that make a dressing room close, that will get you a 2-1 win in Game 7 of a series instead of a 2-1 loss.  I told him that if he was serious, we had nothing to do with him making the team but rather everything was up to him and that if he meant what he said, his path had to start that day."

Scott showed up at camp on July 23-25 and Head Coach Brad Tippett liked what he saw and decided to sign him.  Now it will be Scott who will decide how much he plays, not the management.  His effort - both at and away from the rink - will set the tone of the sizeable rearguard this season.

Born in Victoria, Robson Scott has played all of his minor hockey in the Peninsula with the Peninsula Minor Hockey Association. From an early age, Robson fell in love with hockey, especially the team aspect of the sport. His journey through minor hockey has resulted in many memorable relationships and experiences, one of which was being the youngest member of a very talented Peninsula Midget A team that won the Island title and went on to represent Vancouver Island at the BC provincial tournament in 2019.

Although hockey is his primary sport, Robson also played rugby at St. Michaels University School throughout his four years of high school. For Robson, playing rugby was a perfect sport to complement hockey as it requires many of the same principles needed to succeed, such as combining teamwork with individual skills and communication. Rugby also provided a great way to keep in shape during the off season. Robson’s rugby career has been highlighted by a school rugby tour to Australia during which he experienced the Australian system of developing players and teams to compete at the highest level. He found the training philosophies they offered had strong parallels to those required to achieve success with hockey in Canada.

Away from the rink, when not training and developing his hockey skills, Robson can be found going on boating and fishing adventures with friends and family. Robson also feels very fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel and experience many different cultures across the world.

This coming season, Robson is enrolled at the University of Victoria to study engineering. Robson is very keen to acquire the tools that will allow him to develop ideas and create designs with unique solutions to real world problems, particularly dealing with the relationship between the human brain and body mechanics.

Scott had some excitement when discussing his opportunity this coming season with the local Junior Club. “I’m extremely excited to play alongside such a great group of guys for a fantastic organization like the Peninsula Panthers. This is something I’ve aspired to do ever since I first came to camp three years ago and I’m ecstatic to have achieved my goal of making the team.”

Scott and the Peninsula Panthers will look to knock off some of the rust this Thursday night when they host the Westshore Wolves in the confines of the Panorama Recreation Centre.  And fans will have an opportunity to see the robust defender for the first time.  You just cannot teach Big!
