In the Mood-y

2021-08-13

Speedy and skilled forward Davey Moody combines hockey and business and will be attending the University of Victoria this Fall.

The Peninsula Panthers brass feel like they have the makings of a pretty good squad this 2021/22 season and were fortunate to land skilled Top 6 forward Davey Moody. But more importantly is the character of this young man!

Davey Moody was looking for a place to play.  The Peninsula Panthers were looking for a Top 6 forward.  Both got what they were looking for but both also got more than they bargained for.  The "Cats" put the culture of the Organization front and centre and the character of each individual player is as or more important than the talent of the player.

"Davey showed up at our camp on the weekend of July 23-25 and was checking out his options on the South Island in terms of playing in the VIJHL," explained GM Pete Zubersky.  "The White Rock Whalers of the PJHL had given him permission to skate with our Club to see if there would be a fit as Davey is coming to the University of Victoria in the fall.  Coach Tippett had been in conversations with the White Rock Club and everything was cleared with them.  I never spoke to Davey prior to him going on the ice but after watching him for two minutes, I knew his skill was going to be a great fit.  He can skate and sees the ice well and will most likely fit on a line with Denver Maloney.  But the most important part of the package was not known to me and is the part that I am most thrilled about.  He will be a huge part of our culture here on the Peninsula and the fans are going to fall in love with this kid."

Born in Fukuoka, Japan, to a Japanese mother and Canadian father running a Canadian organization in Tokyo, Davey attended kindergarten in Japan before his family moved back to Vancouver. From a young age, sports have been a focus of Davey's activities, as he wants to continue playing sports for as long as possible. While growing up in almost two countries, Davey studied the art of karate in Japan and Canada and played tennis, baseball, and rugby throughout his childhood. Doing so helped him build confidence, develop friendships, and helped keep him active with a healthy lifestyle.

Davey grew up playing musical instruments such as Piano and Saxophone, providing him with a sense of balance to his activities and a peaceful mindset. Playing an instrument with others in harmony requires focus and dedication that complement sports, schoolwork and other elements of his life. It has opened doors for Davey, such as travelling and gaining an appreciation for the variety of music. "Growing up with music in my family has created a lasting impression, and I plan to continue to play."

Davey played the Alto Saxophone and Tenor saxophone in his school Concert band and Jazz Band from Grade 8-12. His school band program has provided him with a lifetime memorable experience, having toured to Cuba, Disneyland, Idaho, Penticton, and Whistler and performing in concerts and playing at festivals. By being involved with his school through music, Davey made long-lasting relationships and has allowed him to connect with others, experience new cultures, develop teamwork skills, and achieve our common goals.

In addition to music, with a passion for business and sports, at the age of 15, Davey founded a local business, 'Tizon Ties.' While on holiday in Japan with his family, Davey came up with an idea during a family dinner to create a company. Davey founded 'Tizon Ties,' realizing that sports teams have custom team apparel, bags and jackets, and many hockey teams require players to wear ties. A company that creates custom team ties for sports teams. An elegant way to represent your team. Players and coaches can arrive at games looking sharp and well represented with a Tizon Tie, proudly displaying their team logo.

After designing some samples, Davey approached his local hockey association and school to receive their support. Wanting to give back to the community, Davey partnered with his local hockey club - Semiahmoo Minor Hockey Association - to donate a portion of each tie purchase to the 'Grow the game fund" - an initiative by Semiahmoo Hockey to assist families who want to register their kids in hockey but have financial difficulties and provide them with hockey equipment, ice-times, and lessons.

Davey's vision for Tizon Ties is to be a trusted supplier of custom team ties to sports teams that recognize the importance of building stronger and long-lasting connections and memories through associations and sports. Check out the media coverage on Davey Moody here: .

During the 2019/2020 season, Davey played for the Abbotsford Pilots of the PJHL while attending Semiahmoo Secondary School in White Rock. Davey wanted to focus on his last year of high school and prep for university, finishing off the season with his hometown team, the White Rock Whalers. In the 2020/21 season, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no season. During the pandemic, Davey worked at Starbucks while doing University of Victoria online school and spent the majority of his time in the gym working on off-ice training and cardio, trying to get stronger and improve his body.

"I just want to get better and put in the hard work off-ice, so it shows when I'm on the ice. I want to be stronger and faster, so I can make a bigger impact on the ice. The gym is my second home," quipped the youngster.

Davey Moody will be studying Economics at the University of Victoria in the fall and has been traded to the Peninsula Panthers for the upcoming 2021/22 season.

"When I first skated at the camp, the atmosphere and team environment felt very welcoming. Brad and Pete approached me during the camp and were very interested in me. After speaking with Brad and Pete and getting to know more about the team and the staff, I was very confident that the Panthers would be my next home. The Peninsula Panthers is a great hockey organization and I am happy to be part of this hockey club for the upcoming season."

Moody is expected to arrive in town and set up shop near the end of August and should get in a couple weeks of practice and perhaps a couple exhibition games prior to the Club opening their regular season early in September.  The Panthers and Moody were fortunate to tie the knot and fans on the Peninsula will most certainly be in the Mood-y.
