The VIJHL will run a pilot project where each and every Regular Season game will have a three-point outcome. Overtime segments and a shootout will be utilized to break ties.

There will be some significant changes in the VIJHL for this coming season.  The League will be moving to a three-point outcome for each and every Regular Season game.  And the old saying that "A tie is like kissing you sister" will not be in play this time around.  Games that are tied after regulation will see two five-minute overtime frames of 4-on-4 and then 3-on-3 and if still tied a shootout will follow.

"Our longtime scorekeeper Ken Charlish has been in my ear for the past five years saying that we need to go to three-point outcomes for games," said Pete Zubersky.  "Kenny had a good point in that some games had a two-point value if won in regulation or if tied after overtime while a game that went into overtime had a value of three points.  We brought it up at the VIJHL meetings and it passed.  I think everyone is excited to see how it works out."

BC Hockey confirmed the change in a June 14th memo.

The Panthers will open on the road in Westshore against the Wolves on Wednesday, September 5 and will be back to the friendly confines of the Panorama Recreation Centre on Friday, September 7th when they will welcome in the same Wolves Club to complete the back end of the home and home series.

SUBJECT:     Pilot Project: Three (3) Point Standings – Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League

This will confirm receipt of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) request to pilot the implementation of a three (3) point standings structure during regular season play. The rationale to pilot this format is that it aligns with the structure used at the Cyclone Taylor Cup Championship.

Under this pilot project, points will be awarded during the VIJHL regular season as follows:

  • Three (3) points awarded for a regulation win.
  • One (1) point awarded to both teams when regulation ends in a tie.
  • An additional one (1) point will be awarded to the winning team in overtime or a shootout.

Under this point structure overtime ties are not allowed, therefore relief will be granted to the VIJHL for the 2018-2019 season from the Junior B Supplement “Section 13 – Overtime”. This relief will include the addition of a three (3) player shootout if teams remain tied upon the conclusion of the standard overtime format.

This Pilot Project request was addressed at the meeting of the BC Hockey Board of Directors on Sunday, June 10, 2018. The BC Hockey Board of Directors has approved the use of the three (3) point standings structure as part of the VIJHL league operations and the necessary relief from Section 13 of the Junior B Supplement. This approval is granted for the 2018-2019 season and the VIJHL will be responsible for the submission of a complete report on the impact of this pilot project. This report is due to the writer by March 15, 2019 and will be shared with all Junior B leagues and the BC Hockey Board of Directors. Our office will be in contact in the near future to set out the parameters of this report.

I trust this to be satisfactory, but please contact me should you require any further information.
